Eighth Grade Students Eligible to Receive High School Credits Next Year

DMSCougarRussDalton Middle School eighth graders will have the opportunity to receive high school credit starting at the beginning of the 2015-16 school year. Students will be eligible to receive high school credit in Algebra I, Physical Science and Spanish I.

DPS is holding an informational meeting for parents of middle school students, especially parents of rising eighth graders, in the City Hall Council Chambers Thursday, April 30 at 5:00 p.m.

“Dalton Public Schools is very excited to announce this new initiative,” said Jennifer Phinney, director of school support for DPS. “It’s a great opportunity for our students to have a head start before high school, as well as an opportunity for middle and high school teachers to work together.”

DPS administration researched and visited schools similar to DPS across the state that utilize this type of program, such as Hall and Gwinnett counties.

“There are many school districts that offer earning high school credit to eighth grade students,” said Phinney. “We’ve found that the success rate is high. I’m confident this will be a positive addition to our district.”

Although only three courses will be offered next year, the goal is to expand the amount of courses in the future.
