Martineaux to Lead Blue Ridge School

martineauxDr. Alan Martineaux has been named the new principal of Blue Ridge School. The Dalton Board of Education approved the appointment its regular September meeting. He has been the assistant principal at the school and follows Dr. Lisa Goode who is moving to the central office to join the content and engagement team as a director of school support. Brookwood School Named Finalist for STEM Education Awards

1st day 70For the third year in a row, the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) and the TAG Education Collaborative (TAG-Ed) named Brookwood School a finalist in the 2015 Georgia Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Education Awards. Dalton Staff Prepare for School Start


Employees from across Dalton Public Schools returned to work on Monday for pre-planning to kick off the 2015-16 school year. The day was filled with meetings, greetings and preparing classrooms and the school for students to return on Thursday, Aug. 6. Most school principals started the day off with staff meetings but gave their teachers time to meet with their grade level or teaching teams and start readying their rooms for students.

Summer PreK Students Learn About Recycling

SummerPrekRecyclingStudents in the rising Pre-Kindergarten Summer Transition program at Blue Ridge enjoyed having Liz Swafford, executive director of Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful and recycling and education program coordinator for Dalton-Whitfield Solid Waste Authority, visit their classroom. Ms. Swafford wore her dress made entirely from recycled materials and taught the students how they could recycle, reuse and reduce trash in our community. Shown with Ms. Swafford are students Miranda Barajas and Leonardo Jarquin.

Big Red READS Returns for 6th Year

Big Red READS is back for its sixth summer of reading and building home libraries. Every Tuesday and Wednesday through July 29 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., the Big Red READS bus will be near Dalton parks and schools with books for all grade levels. Continue reading

DPS Hosts 2nd Annual Elementary Chess Tournament

DPS Chess 2“Players, please shake hands with your opponent – 5, 4, 3, 2, 1,” said Dr. Phil Jones, Park Creek Principal. “Begin your games”. Ninety-six anxious fourth and fifth graders became completely silent. The intense concentration and focus for the next 20 minutes became palpable as students from each elementary school competed against each other in the Second Annual DPS Chess Tournament.

Using iPads, eight fourth graders and eight fifth graders from each of Dalton’s six elementary schools played many rounds of chess until the last four players from each grade level remained. Fourth grader Erickson Garnica and fifth grader Daniel Resindez, both from City Park School, placed first in their grade level. Continue reading
